In 1902 the Rev. T. Smaill, B.A., died suddenly on Epi after an exhausting walk to visit a poor sick native. The captain and officers of the Wallaroo erected a brass tablet in the little church at Laraemiu with this inscription:— “In loving memory of the Rev. Thomas Smaill, B.A., who gave his life for the regeneration of the people of these islands [New Hebrides]. H.M.S. Wallaroo.”

Hi, have you come across a vintage print of "Chang the Chinese Giant"? like that Te Papa has? Or any news item about Chang being photographed in the London Portrait Rooms?
Thanks,
John Turner

Hi John, I couldn't find the Chang photo on Te Papa's website, but I do recall seeing photos of him. Whether is a photo I own or if's one I've seen elsewhere I don't remember. If I had one by the London Portrait Gallery I would have put it on my website. The Hocken Library has a photo of him and his wife by the London Portrait Rooms on their website. I had a look though Papers Past but could find no reference to the photo being taken.
best wishes - Tony
