Richard Redfern born circa 1855 son of James Redfern, died 25 June 1893 Burwood Road, Hawthorn, Victoria, Australia aged 38 years, married 28 January 1880 at the residence of the bride's father, Emma Harriett Whitlock eldest daughter of James Whitlock of Newton, Auckland.

At the Bay of Islands Regatta in 1883… ‘The Maori canoe race was a grand sight and the canoes as they passed the flagstaff [on the waterfront] have been photographed by Mr. Redfern' (New Zealand Herald 18 February 1883).
By some miracle, do any of these photographs of waka survive? They were large, one had 48 men the other 46.
