Generally unless the photo has a date written on it, it would be impossible to known the exact date it was taken. None of his records have survived so the only evidence available are the photographs themselves. Also the photograph could have been taken at an earlier date, and the customer has asked for more copies. The photographer would use is currently available card. The design might have changed since the original photograph was taken.Early Canterbury Photographyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07339666224265735452noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4136416988239175653.post-56962854102358787152021-01-21T18:04:58.628-08:002021-01-21T18:04:58.628-08:00Is it possible to narrow down the date of a photo ...Is it possible to narrow down the date of a photo by P Shourup, using the design on the back of the photo? I have a photo of a couple (I think my great grandparents) and the design on the back has a trellis design with a vine entwined. It has P Schourup, Artist Photographer, Christchurch as the main wording. It doesn't mention Colombo Street at all. I would appreciate any guidance please. Many thanks.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14913191381915422455noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4136416988239175653.post-50520413950020559882013-10-19T19:18:59.709-07:002013-10-19T19:18:59.709-07:00I have a P Schourop photo on the back of which is ...I have a P Schourop photo on the back of which is his name, then "Artist Photographer" "Christchurch" surrounded by decorative vines and trellis which can definitely be dated to 1878 by ages of children in photo. He used a very similar crown motif on his cards in Australia so it can be assumed his New Zealand cards with this motif will date from immediately after his 1875 arrival.

I don’t know how long he continued using this card but one photograph I have dated 1880 shows a very different style of card. So certainly your card will date from after 1875 and probably before 1880.

How does this fit with information you know already about your great uncle?Early Canterbury Photographyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07339666224265735452noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4136416988239175653.post-18829033206215135052011-12-26T14:26:28.352-08:002011-12-26T14:26:28.352-08:00Can you date approximately a photo of my great unc...Can you date approximately a photo of my great uncle by P Schourup which has a relatively plain reverse with crown in middle, same as several above?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4136416988239175653.post-43201494739573050692011-10-12T21:33:40.733-07:002011-10-12T21:33:40.733-07:00I would think that if the person's name is not...I would think that if the person's name is not written on the reverse of the photograph and your grandmother didn't know who she was, it would be almost impossible to identify after over 120 years who she was.Early Canterbury Photographyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07339666224265735452noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4136416988239175653.post-55905602537484599762011-10-12T20:52:44.453-07:002011-10-12T20:52:44.453-07:00I have a photograph from my grandmother by P. It is of a young woman with her hair braided round her head in a dress with lots of lace and ribbon looking at a book on a chair. How do I identify it? CRJAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
