OBITUARY.
Robert Hellyer Priddle.
The King of Terrors has claimed another victim in the person of Captain R. H. Priddle, of the Grosvenor Hotel, who breathed his last at the age of 53, at his private residence in Arthur Street, this morning, at about nine o'clock. The end had not been unexpected, in fact, had been anticipated hourly for nearly a week, and these conditions will emolliate, but not mitigate the general regret which will be felt for the departure of one whose worth of character had gained for him the most widespread and best of regards, and of whom it may truly be said he could not point to one enemy.

Captain Priddle had lived in Blenheim for 13 years [i.e. since about 1881], and, though he took no active part in public matters, showing rather a retiring disposition, he was universally held in high estimation, his integrity of purpose and qualities of mind and heart establishing him a large circle of friends of all classes. The genial captain had been confined to the House for the last ten weeks on account of rheumatic gout, from which he had suffered for some five years towards the end congestion of the lungs supervened and was the direct cause of death.

Deceased was a native of Devonshire, and was born at Torbay in the year 1841. At the early age of eleven [1852] he entered the merchant service as apprentice on board a sailing vessel trading in the Mediterranean fruit industry. At the age of twenty-one [1862] he successfully passed his examination as a master mariner, and his services were so highly appreciated by his employers that he was at once appointed to the command of a brig called the "Jane Goodyear." After a time he decided to quit the hardships and trials of the fruit trade, and bought a share in a barquentine named the "Ann Wheaton" of which he obtained the captaincy, and then settled down to an easier life of trading all over the world, sometimes remaining from the Old Country for a period of three or four years.

After returning from one of his long cruises he disposed of his share in the vessel and became sole owner of a sister ship called the "Ocean Ranger" with which he touched at almost every country on the globe, and gained the distinction of taking the first English vessel into the port of Acchin.

During his nineteen years as master he never experienced a single mishap either to vessel or men. He came to New Zealand in 1880 with a general cargo from New York for Lyttleton and Auckland, but on reaching the former port, he was so impressed with the future of this colony that he resolved to retire from the sea and settle down. He chartered two small schooners to take on the Auckland portion of the cargo, and sold his vessel to Mr C. W. Turner, of Christchurch, who afterwards employed her in the Capetown and Mauritius trade.

The "Ocean Ranger" is still coasting in Australian waters. Captain Laycock who was drowned from the steamer Barrabool a short time ago, served his apprenticeship under the old captain. Captain Priddle came from Lyttelton here in March 1881 and purchased the Grosvenor Hotel, then in the occupation of Mr Andrew Casey. He leaves a widow and nine children, to mourn his loss.

Mr R. F. Priddle in the employment of the firm of Clouston and Co. is the eldest son of the deceased. Captain Priddle was an onlooker at the destruction by fire a few months ago of the old Grosvenor Hotel, to which he had effected many improvements. He suffered a considerable pecuniary loss on that occasion, but with commendable enterprise commenced immediately the erection of the handsome edifice which has just been completed; and it is a matter of regret that he never had the pleasure of seeing the new building, his demise occurring simultaneously with the final development of his new hostelry.

The captain was a model publican, and kept his house in a manner the orderliness of which was much reputed, and gained him the respect of all parties. He was a liberal patron of athletic and other institutions tending to moral and physical improvement, and in this respect his demise will be much deplored. His kindliness of disposition is well known, and there are many who have reason to remember his benevolence and charity, which was unostentatious, and dispensed to a larger extent than was apparent.

To the family of Captain Priddle we tender our sincere sympathy. The funeral takes place at 2.30 p.m. tomorrow.
