William Sherlock was born on 13 August 1846 at St Pancras, London the son of William Sherlock (snr) and Anne Sherlock nee Henshaw. His grandfather Thomas Weogzell Henshaw (1780-1868) was a Professor of Music and a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal.
The 1841 census shows his parents at 6 Camden Terrace, St Pancras, his father was a solicitor aged 28 years.
William was baptised at Old Church, Saint Pancras, London on 23 June 1847. Their other children included Anne born about 1843, Amelia born in 1848 and Rose born in 1850.

The 1871 census shows his father William Sherlock (snr), then a widower, living in East Budleigh, Devon occupied as a photographer with Ann, Rose and Adelaide Sherlock. At the Paris Exhibition of 1878 "Mr William Sherlock, of Budleigh, Salterton" exhibited "photographs from nature." Trewman's Exeter Flying Post, May 8, 1878; Issue 5908.
The 1881 census shows William Sherlock (snr) a widow aged 68 living at Fore Street, East Budleigh, Devon. His occupation is shown as a photographer. Also living at this address was his two daughters Ann aged 38 and Rose, a dressmaker aged 30, both were unmarried. He died in 1889 (Deaths Jun 1889 Sherlock, William aged 76 reg. St. Thomas vol. 5b, page 21.) Following their father's death, Ann and Rose continued to live at Fore Street, East Budleigh. The 1891 census shows Annie Sherlock aged 48 and Rose aged 40. Annie's occupation is given as a photographer and Rose as a dressmaker.

The members of St. John's choir were photographed in a group outside the church yesterday, the picture being intended as a souvenir for the Rev. E. Bailey, who leaves the province in a few days. The artist was Mr Sherlock. The rev. gentleman will preach his farewell sermon to-morrow at St. John's Church.
Presentation. Yesterday evening the teachers and scholars attending S. John's Sunday schools bade a formal adieu to their late pastor the Rev E. Bailey who is shortly about to return home...the more important business of the evening; which consisted of the presentation of an address, a purse of money, and photographs of the teachers and choir in separate groups was proceeded with... Mr A. Gee then in a short but feeling speech next begged Mr Bailey's acceptance of a purse and a group photograph of the teachers and members of the Bible class. Mr T. Gates, senr., next, on behalf of the choir, presented Mr Bailey with a group photograph of the members of the choir and Mr Bailey returned thanks in a lengthy speech...The address was engrossed on vellum, in old English text, and beautifully illuminated, the artiste Mr James Goodman — having acquitted himself with very commendable skill. Photographic Views. - A number of remarkably good photographic views, taken in and around Christchurch, may be seen at Messrs Coates and Co.'s, Colombo street. Of their kind nothing better has ever been seen in Christchurch, indeed it is questionable whether a local artist has hitherto produced anything so excellent as some of them. Several views on the Avon are perfect gems, the clearness of outline, the exceptional distinctness characterising the foliage, together with the general finish of the pictures, being such as to excite admiration at a first glance. Mr Sherlock is the artist, and he is to be congratulated on having done what one can scarcely believe it possible to excel.

West Coast Views. — Mr Sherlock, of Gaul's photographic establishment, has succeeded in turning out ten excellent views of West Coast road scenery, taken in the neighbourhood of Power's accommodation house. It is Mr Gaul's intention to obtain views of the best portions of the scenery right through to Hokitika, and he will commence the tour early next month, taking with him all the necessary apparatus to enable him to carry out his project satisfactorily.
The wind blew furiously at intervals yesterday. One heavy gust carried away the sky-lights from Mr Sherlock's photographic studio, and every pane of glass was smashed to atoms.
A curiosity in the way of photography is on view at Mr Sherlock's studio, Buller Road. Our local photographer is of an enterprising nature, and undeterred by the fearful gale that was raging last Tuesday night at 10 o'clock he took his camera out on a shadow catching cruise, and succeeded in getting a very good view of the State School and master's house. He had to shelter under Mr Wills' verandah. The rain was falling in torrents, but the lightning flashes were so brilliant that he succeeded in attaining his object, viz., taking a photo by the aid of the electrical discharges. As a souvenir of the storm a copy is well worth securing.

...There are also to be seen photographs of a high class from the establishments of Messrs Cherrill, Schourup, and Sherlock, and the first-named was singled out by the crowd for special praise, owing to the beauty of the colouring.
Following the closure of Grand and Dunlop's studio and the auction of its contents in July 1887 William Sherlock took over the studio in the Victoria Buildings and operated from this location and from his studio in Oxford Terrace West.

Our local photographer Mr. Sherlock after sojourning for over six years on the Buller Road has removed into a more central locality and is displaying an artistic and carefully finished collection of photos in the premises lately occupied by C. Smith, draper Upper Broadway.
Edward Teague was brought before Messrs Irving and Cohen J's.P., this morning to answer a charge of obtaining money by false pretences from Edward Pascoe at Merrijigs on June 18th. Evidence was given by Mr and Mrs Pascoe to the effect that accused came to Merrijigs, and represented himself as a photographer representing Mr W. Sherlock. He took photos for them and charged 15s. Mr Pascoe gave him £1 and accused left without tendering 5s change. Pascoe then laid an information, in consequence of which a warrant was issued for Teague's arrest. W. Sherlock gave evidence to the effect that he had known accused for 22 years, and knew nothing derogatory to him. He came in June to witness, and represented himself as being "without a shilling," and, witness informed him that be might possibly do; something in the photographing line at Merrijigs, and lent him the necessary apparatus to go on his own (accused's) account. When accused returned he left witness the negatives to be developed, but said nothing about the money received. Mr North, for accused argued that the statement on which accused had proceeded at Merrijigs was in fact correct, and consequently there had been no false pretences. There had been remissness in not paying Pascoe the 5s change, but the accused was prepared to swear that it was purely forgetfulness. The Bench considered that the evidence did not establish the charge, and dismissed the case.
Mr Sherlock has on view a number of beautifully executed photos of various scenes in and around Reefton taken during the late snow storm. Those wishing to send a souvenir to distant friends could not possibly find more appropriate mementos and would do well to pay an early visit to the studio.
An incident connected with the photographing of a family group by Mr R. Sherlock came very near developing into something extraordinarily sensational the other day. Indeed, we are not quite sure whether the sensational element is quite eliminated yet.
It occurred in this way. The group in question were placed in position, light regulated, camera adjusted, slide dropped, and what I appeared to be a highly satisfactory portrait obtained.
But— and here comes the strange part of the story when the negative was examined the shadowy outline of a woman's face with one great staring eye and the chin resting on the hand, on the third finger of which appeared three large rings, was plainly discernible in the centre of the group.
A second attempt was made, but with exactly the same results, only the second time the face appeared in profile. Considerable mystification, not to say uneasiness, ensued, and he (sic) uncanny looking negative was the centre of attraction in Mr Sherlock's studio for days, those interested in psychical phenomena deeming they were on the verge of a discovery which would revolutionise all accepted scientific theories.
Instances of spooks and spirit photographs recorded in W. T. Stead's now defunct periodical "Borderland" were recalled to mind and passed from mouth to mouth with solemn enunciation. But all such speculations were rudely dispelled by the commonsense emanation proferred by Mr Sherlock, who says that he can suggest only one way of accounting for this angular photographic freak — a unique one in his experience - and that [?] that the plates used and forwarded to him in sealed boxes by a London firm may have previously served a similar purpose under the old collodion process, the glass retaining the impression of the former image, which was imperceptible until the chemical coating was applied. On the other hand it is improbable that an old established firm carrying on an extensive colonial trade should consider it worth while to buy up secondhand plates when they possess the most efficient machinery for manufacturing new one according to the most improved methods.
Even assuming such to be the case, how comes it that duplicate impressions are not more frequently heard [of?]. We learn that Mr Sherlock is determined to sift the matter to the bottom, and intends communicating with the Home firm.
Meantime the finished picture has been forwarded to the persons photographed, and if the face can be identified by them even the most sceptical must admit that "there are more things in heaven and on earth than are dreamt of in man's philosophy."
We have just received from Mr Bell, of Greymouth, through Mr Sherlock our local photographer, photographs of the funeral of the late Thomas Billet, taken in four sections. The views are clear and distinct and are well finished off. As a momento of the sad drag fatality, we can recommend these photographs.
The Reefton Cycling Club's programme for the 24th May is now issued. It comprises 12 events, chief among which is the Wheel Race, two miles, first prize £4 and 30s and the One Mile (paced) West Coast Championship, the prize for which is a gold medal, valued at, £3 3s. For the Club Handicap Mr W. Sherlock has kindly presented a trophy valued at £3 3s which consists of an enlarged photo of the winner in a handsome gilt frame. The same gentleman has also presented a prize for the prettiest or most unique lady's or gent's bicycle. Included in the programme are two foot races; 100 and 250 yards.
The casket and illuminated volume of views which is intended to be presented to Mr David Ziman as a tribute of respect and good feeling from the people of Inangahua is now exhibited in the show window of Mr Sherlock, photographer, Upper Broadway. The casket of which the case is white pine, beautifully veneered with mottled kauri, is the work of Mr Jewel, of Christchurch. Both articles are in excellent taste and we are satisfied will be prized by the recipient. — Herald.
(1) This may refer to the photographers Hammond and Taylor who operated in Reefton in 1889 and 1890.
(2) An arrival date in 1872 seems unlikely as William's eldest daughter Louisa was baptised at St Luke's Church, Christchurch on 19 April 1871. The Reefton Cemetery burial records indicate she was born in Christchurch so the family must have arrived before her birth on 10 January 1871. If William arrived on the "Zealandia" it must have been on a previous voyage. The "Zealandia" arrived at Lyttelton on 23 December 1870, however William Sherlock's name is not shown as a passenger or as a Government immigrant.

One hundred years later this collection of photographs by William Sherlock was returned from Canada and donated to the Alexander Turnbull Library:
An ornate boxed album gives insight into a time when mining activities were revered, rather than protested. The album, bound in red leather with a gilded cover and enclosed in a velvet lined kauri casket, was presented to mining entrepreneur David Ziman in 1909 by the grateful citizens of Reefton. Inside are 12 photographs of the West Coast town and surrounds and the mining machinery by noted local photographer William Sherlock.
"These days we might sniff at mining activities," says John Sullivan, Curator of the Photographic Archive. "But in those days, mining made the West Coast the Silicon Valley of New Zealand."
"David Ziman was really an international businessman, and the local papers of the time show that the locals hung on his every word."
John says the significance of the album lies in the fact that its entire history is documented, its excellent condition and the art of the box and album-makers. The photographer was also a "good craftsman and the pictures are informative - they give a pretty good idea of the whole landscape."
John and colleague Kirsty Cox, Digital Materials Librarian, found Papers Past, Timeframes and other online sources invaluable in researching the albums. Information that would have taken months to compile was found in a matter of days.

Sherlock, William, Photographer, Broadway, Reefton. Private residence, Buller Road. This business was established in the year 1889 (1), and acquired by Mr. Sherlock in 1890. The studio stands on leasehold ground, and the premises include a shop, work shop, and a commodious studio, with top and side lights. Mr Sherlock was born on the 13th August, 1846 in London, where he was educated, and learned photography under his father in Devonshire. He afterwards came to New Zealand, and arrived in Lyttelton, by the ship "Zealandia," in the year 1872 (2). Mr Sherlock moved to Christchurch, where he was in business as a photographer for eighteen years. He settled on the West Coast in 1890. Cyclopedia of New Zealand.notes:
New donation from Canada
The Alexander Turnbull Library recently accepted a donation from Canada to its Photographic Archive.
