Alice Ovens - Daughter of John Ovens.
Paparoa
(From a Correspondent.) With sincere regret I have to record the death of Miss Alice Ovens, aged 24 years. Miss A Ovens was the oldest daughter of Mr John Ovens, an old resident of Matakohe, and was the first white child born there. Miss Ovens was beloved by all, of a cheerful, amiable, self-denying disposition, a good singer, always ready to take party in any entertainments or concerts that took place at Matakohe and surrounding districts. Miss Ovens was buried by the side of her brother Walter (who died the week previous) in the Matakohe cemetery. Her mortal remains were borne to the grave by her companions in life, on Sunday, the 14th inst in sure and certain hope of her resurrection to eternal life, followed by a large concourse of mourners. The coffin was laden with flowers, at the foot of the grave was a floral cross, and the words "Thy will be done," words spoken by herself a short time before her death. The Rev. C. A. Tobin officiated. Northern Advocate, 27 July 1889, Page 3
