Photography. — Mr G. E. A. Burrell, photographer, of Chester street, Christchurch, has on view in the shop window of Mr Buckner, picture-frame maker, Victoria street, a large frame of photographs, representing the Salvation Army New Zealand staff, March, 1891. The group has been taken as a memento of the occasion of Colonel Taylor's farewell to New Zealand. The officers are taken cabinet size, with the exception of the centre portrait, I which is much larger. The likenesses and general expression of each figure has been faithfully caught and brought out, and finished off in the best style. The photographs are mounted on a beautifully illuminated card, and set off in a massive gilt frame. Great credit is due to Mr Burrell for the way in which he has carried out the work. - Star , Issue 7174, 27 May 1891, Page 3

"To Mother & Father with love Gwen 9 months 1917"
I bought a photo by Burrell at an antiques fair in England. It's a studio shot of three children - Leslie, Bertie and Lucy - living in Riccarton. The writing on the back says they are "Annie's children" and the sender signs her/himself as "your loving Cousin M. Kingdon". From the clothes I'd think it's from the 1890s. Often wonder who they were.

ReplyDeletehi
I think this is the family. Annie will be Ann Freeman Johnston Kingdon who married Thomas Sherwood, and the three children will be Arthur Leslie Sherwood, Herbert Sherwood and Lucy Frances Sherwood. Not sure who "your loving Cousin M. Kingdon" will be but could be Annie's sister Frances Mary Kingdon who appears to have been unmarried when she died in 1954, she could have been known as Mary Kingdon. The Kingdon family came to New Zealand from Cornwall.
Ann Freeman Johnston Kingdon born circa, reg. 1874/20037 New Zealand the daughter of Catherine and Josiah Kingdon, married Thomas Sherwood about 1900, reg. 1900/2304 New Zealand, issue:
1. Arthur Leslie Sherwood born circa 1901, reg. 1901/8931, died 1926 aged 25 years
2. Herbert Sherwood born circa 1902, reg. 1902/18107, died 1990
3. Lucy Frances Sherwood born circa 1906, reg. 1906/20993, married 1939, reg. 1939/13792 George Joseph Watson, died 2002
In the photo you have does Leslie look the eldest and Lucy the youngest?
ReplyDeleteHello ECP, and thank you for your research! Sorry it's taken me so long to check back - I forgot to tick the box asking to be notified of follow-ups. Anyway, now I know who they were :))
ReplyDeleteYes, Leslie was the eldest; the three are arranged in height order from Leslie on the right down to Lucy on the left. I should have given you the whole of the writing on the back, which says:
"This is our kiddies at Riccarton Leslie aged 7 1/2, Bertie aged 6 and wee Lucy 2 years, Annie's children. Hope you are all well as it leaves us in N. Z. we have had a very severe winter snowing today. With kind regards to you all I remain your loving Cousin M. Kingdon "
I'm sure your guess is correct and the writer was (Frances) Mary.
