"Mrs and Mrs Tom Howitt"
by Electric Studios, Jackson Street, Petone

The wedding was solemnised recently at St. Augustine's Church, Petone, of Pearl Charity Grace, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. Asplet, Petone, to Thomas Francis, second son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Howitt, of Wellington. The Rev. Mr. Ramson officiated. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a gown fashioned in early Victorian style, and was of lace zoralee over georgette with full draped skirt, finished with a bouccilae ornament in front. The dainty veil was attached to the new-fashioned Juliet cap with eardrops of orange blossoms at the sides and formed a beautiful train. She carried a beautiful bouquet of tiger lilies, carnations, asters, and maidenhair fern.

Miss Gladys Asplet, chief bridesmaid and sister of the bride, wore salmon pink crepe satin with hat to match, and carried a bouquet of mauve pansies and asters. The two little flower girls, Edith Asplet and Evelyn Schofer, sister and cousin of the bride looked, very charming, the former in cyclamen crepe satin, and the latter in deep turquoise satin, both with hats to match and carrying posies.

Mr. N. Smith, of Wellington, was best man. A dainty, silk horseshoe was given the bride as she left the church, later a reception was held at St. Augustine's Hall, where Mrs. Asplet, mother of the bride, received the guests, wearing Pavlova crepe de chine and hat to match. Mrs. D. Howitt, mother of the bridegroom, wore black silk trimmed with old gold lace, with hat to match. Later Mr. and Mrs Howitt left for New Plymouth by car, the bride's travelling frock being of almond green reppe, and a hat to tone. They were the recipients of many useful presents.

When the two people in this photo stared unblinking into the camera lens more than 150 years ago they would never have dreamed their photo would spark the interest of complete strangers in generations to come.

According to the spidery script on the back of the photo, the couple are Denis Broughan, who arrived in New Zealand in 1854 on board the Constantine, and Nanny (Nancy May) Broughan (nee Aroa or Airey), who arrived in 1855 aboard the Maori.

Picton man Peter Robinson bought the photo for $1 from a garage sale last week. He used to own an antique store and was drawn to the frame, not the picture it held.

"I went there to buy a bike and I ended up buying this for its frame for $1. As far as I can tell, it is from the turn of the century, but obviously the backing has been re-done."

He didn't realise the potential significance of the photo, or the impact it would have on the public until he displayed it at the Blenheim flea market for $15 on Saturday.

"People were coming up to me and saying: `You can't sell that, someone might be really interested in getting that back in their possession.' Some of them got quite angry, so my conscience got the better of me and I put it aside for another day."

Even though the photos are 156 years old, the images are clear.

Peter Robinson said he will hold on to the picture for a while to see if any descendants come forward
.

Lasting impression: This photo of two New Zealand immigrants was taken in the 19th century and Picton man Peter Robinson would like to return it to anyone who might know them or their family.

GOLDEN WEDDING.
A pleasing function took place yesterday at "Willow Brook," the occasion being the golden wedding of Mr and Mrs Broughan, the whole family being present. It is rather a unique occurrence to see parents at that age sit down to the table with all their children, ten in number, well and healthy. Mr and Mrs Broughan came out to this district when but boy and girl at the age of twelve and thirteen years, and have been settled here ever since. They were married on April 10th, 1860, and have just completed fifty years together, having watched this town grow from about one house to what we see today. The health of the old couple was heartily drunk and also that of the children, bringing a very pleasant afternoon to a close. Numerous congratulations and presents were received, testifying to the esteem in which Mr and Mrs Broughan are held.

OBITUARY.
Robert Hellyer Priddle.
The King of Terrors has claimed another victim in the person of Captain R. H. Priddle, of the Grosvenor Hotel, who breathed his last at the age of 53, at his private residence in Arthur Street, this morning, at about nine o'clock. The end had not been unexpected, in fact, had been anticipated hourly for nearly a week, and these conditions will emolliate, but not mitigate the general regret which will be felt for the departure of one whose worth of character had gained for him the most widespread and best of regards, and of whom it may truly be said he could not point to one enemy.

Captain Priddle had lived in Blenheim for 13 years [i.e. since about 1881], and, though he took no active part in public matters, showing rather a retiring disposition, he was universally held in high estimation, his integrity of purpose and qualities of mind and heart establishing him a large circle of friends of all classes. The genial captain had been confined to the House for the last ten weeks on account of rheumatic gout, from which he had suffered for some five years towards the end congestion of the lungs supervened and was the direct cause of death.

Deceased was a native of Devonshire, and was born at Torbay in the year 1841. At the early age of eleven [1852] he entered the merchant service as apprentice on board a sailing vessel trading in the Mediterranean fruit industry. At the age of twenty-one [1862] he successfully passed his examination as a master mariner, and his services were so highly appreciated by his employers that he was at once appointed to the command of a brig called the "Jane Goodyear." After a time he decided to quit the hardships and trials of the fruit trade, and bought a share in a barquentine named the "Ann Wheaton" of which he obtained the captaincy, and then settled down to an easier life of trading all over the world, sometimes remaining from the Old Country for a period of three or four years.

After returning from one of his long cruises he disposed of his share in the vessel and became sole owner of a sister ship called the "Ocean Ranger" with which he touched at almost every country on the globe, and gained the distinction of taking the first English vessel into the port of Acchin.

During his nineteen years as master he never experienced a single mishap either to vessel or men. He came to New Zealand in 1880 with a general cargo from New York for Lyttleton and Auckland, but on reaching the former port, he was so impressed with the future of this colony that he resolved to retire from the sea and settle down. He chartered two small schooners to take on the Auckland portion of the cargo, and sold his vessel to Mr C. W. Turner, of Christchurch, who afterwards employed her in the Capetown and Mauritius trade.

The "Ocean Ranger" is still coasting in Australian waters. Captain Laycock who was drowned from the steamer Barrabool a short time ago, served his apprenticeship under the old captain. Captain Priddle came from Lyttelton here in March 1881 and purchased the Grosvenor Hotel, then in the occupation of Mr Andrew Casey. He leaves a widow and nine children, to mourn his loss.

Mr R. F. Priddle in the employment of the firm of Clouston and Co. is the eldest son of the deceased. Captain Priddle was an onlooker at the destruction by fire a few months ago of the old Grosvenor Hotel, to which he had effected many improvements. He suffered a considerable pecuniary loss on that occasion, but with commendable enterprise commenced immediately the erection of the handsome edifice which has just been completed; and it is a matter of regret that he never had the pleasure of seeing the new building, his demise occurring simultaneously with the final development of his new hostelry.

The captain was a model publican, and kept his house in a manner the orderliness of which was much reputed, and gained him the respect of all parties. He was a liberal patron of athletic and other institutions tending to moral and physical improvement, and in this respect his demise will be much deplored. His kindliness of disposition is well known, and there are many who have reason to remember his benevolence and charity, which was unostentatious, and dispensed to a larger extent than was apparent.

To the family of Captain Priddle we tender our sincere sympathy. The funeral takes place at 2.30 p.m. tomorrow.
