Mr. Wallace Robert Poll, the well-known photographer and artist of Hastings, died this week. Born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, in 1873, of a well-known County family, the late Mr. Poll early made a name for himself as an artist. He secured a number of diplomas for his artistic work and many of his pictures are still in private collections. Some 32 years ago [about 1905] Mr. Poll came out to New Zealand with the intention of taking up farming in the Dominion with his cousin at Petane. After a year or so he gave up farming and took up his artistic work, being for a few years manager for Buntings, photographer, at Napier. In 1909 he decided to enter business on his own account and opened up a studio in Hastings. This he maintained until his death, though in recent years his business activity was frequently interrupted owing to ill-health.

Picture with a History
Many people passing in and out of the office of a Hastings land-agent may have noticed hanging on a wall a large oil painting with a gold frame, depicting a restful scene of leafy-trees, a smooth flowing river on which rests a small boat, children playing on the bank, hills and windmill in the distance, and soft cloud effects. Some may have stopped to take a second look, others may have turned away thinking it was just “another picture.” But this oil painting which is believed to be by John Constable, the famous English artist, who died more than 100 years ago, has an interesting and even romantic history. The present owner of the painting is Mrs. Wallace Poll, of Hastings, whose husband, the late Mr. Poll, bought it some 30 years ago from the family of the last [late?] Sir William Russell, father of Sir Andrew Russell [he was the uncle of Major-General Sir Andrew Russell not his father].
