Henry Thomas Bowers born about 1823-1825 in Prestbury, Cheshire, England, died 17 November 1902 in New Plymouth, New Zealand at the house of his son-in-law, William Henry Pascoe, reg. 1902/6760 aged 79 years, married about 1845, reg. Sep 1845 Cheltenham vol. 11 page 265, Frances Usher born circa 1817 Campden, Gloucestershire, baptised 14 September 1817, Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire daughter of Thomas Usher and Frances Hodgkin, died 20 July 1884 at her home Clyde Cottage, Tuam Street, Christchurch aged 67 years. 

 

The 1851 census shows him living at the New School House in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire. He was aged 26 years and employed as a National School Master. His children Henry T. Bowers, Frances E. Bowers and Jane Bowers are also shown.

The 1861 census shows him living at 68 Southgate Street in Gloucester, he was then aged 36 years and engaged as an artist and photographer. His wife Frances who was born in Campden, Gloucestershire was then aged 42 years, also shown were their children:

Monument to Bishop Hooper. - We have received from Mr. H. T. Bowers a very fine photograph of a monument which has just been erected at Gloucester, by public subscription, to Bishop Hooper, the Protestant martyr. It is a noble structure, placed in the churchyard of St. Mary de Load, an ancient and curious church built partly upon the foundation of the first Christian church which was built of stone in this country. The photography is very perfect indeed.

In August 1866, Henry Thomas Bowers, of No. 123, Southgate-street, Gloucester, Photographic Artist, was declared bankrupt. The creditor was Stephen Usher, Beer Retailer (Bower's wife Frances Usher had a brother named Stephen Usher).

Henry Thomas Bowers, schoolmaster from Cheshire arrived at Lyttelton on the Blue Jacket in August 1867, as an assisted Government immigrant [1] he would have been then aged about 42 years.  His family - Fanny Bowers, Eliza Bowers, Louisa Bowers and Albert Bowers all from Gloucestershire arrived on the Mermaid in December 1867 [2].

Lyttelton Borough Council.- A group of photographs of the Lyttelton Borough Council has just been executed by Mr Bowers, photographer, of Lyttelton, which reflect, great credit upon the artist. The group consists of the Mayor, in the centre of course, with Councillors England and Mutton at the top, Councillors Balestiee and Allwright occupy the right hand side, and Councillors Willcox and Chalmers the left hand side, while Councillor Ward is placed in the centre at the bottom. On the right and left at the bottom are placed respectively H. C. LaNauze, the town clerk, and Mr D'Oyley, the solicitor. The whole group surmounting a miniature view of the town and harbour of Lyttelton.

At an Art Exhibition held in the Museum in 1870 - 
Turning to the right, and following the alphabetic order of the plan, we come next to a bay, the two sides of which are occupied by New Zealand photographs and the wall end by a case containing rare old china...The north side of the bay is hung with photographs executed by Mr Seeley (sic). These, we have no doubt, will be very much admired. They evince true artistic taste as well as finished mechanical skill. The photographs on the opposite side of the bay are contributed by Messrs Mundy, Bowers, and others. Mr Bowers sends a good view of Lyttelton, and Mr Mundy a view of Akaroa which struck us as not altogether worthy of the reputation he has deservedly gained. The Committee expect that the department of New Zealand photographs will be more fully represented before the Exhibition is closed.

Civil Cases. — Bowers v. Morgan, claim £1 4s 3d. This was a claim for some photographic views of defendant's house, which defendant refused to receive as they were not in accordance with his instructions. The Bench after hearing the evidence, gave judgment for plaintiff, £1 2s, and 10s costs.

A Memento of the Opening of the Railway.— A very good photograph of the portion of East street, Ashburton, showing the triumphal arch erected in honour of the opening of the railway from Christchurch to Dunedin, and the visit of the Governor to Ashburton, has been taken by Mr H. J. Bowers (sic), a local artist. The size is eight inches by ten, and the picture is a very creditable specimen of the art.

Mr. William Brickell Gibbs, well known in Nelson as a photographer, has transferred his sphere of action to Wellington, and has opened an establishment in Lambton Quay, opposite Whitmore-street, which is to be known as the English and Continental Photographic Atelier.

The studio and gallery, which are on the upper floor, are exceedingly spacious and well-appointed. The former is elegantly furnished, and contains a piano and other luxuries, and the latter, besides being admirably situated for obtaining good "lights," is supplied with all the latest improvements in the photographic art. A dressing-room and other conveniences are provided for visitors. Mr. Gibbs has gone to considerable trouble and expense to make his establishment A1, and we wish him luck.

The Sydney Morning Herald, in an article on photographic exhibits at the Sydney Exhibition, says:— "New Zealand photography is most extensively represented. It is startling to find a country which but a few years back was a stranger to the arts of civilisation producing numbers of works of the most artistic character, and closely rivalling those of lands in which a refined taste has been cultivated for centuries. 

Mr. W. Collie, of Napier, has a really magnificent display of negatives, taken by the wet collodion process, comprising some of the most remarkable scenes to be found in New Zealand. Nothing we have ever seen at English photographic exhibitions could surpass them. They are simply perfection.

Mr. R. H. Bartlett, of Auckland; Mr. A. T. Bothamley, of Wellington; Messrs. Fox Brothers, of Thames, Mr. W. B. Gibbs, of Wellington; Messrs. Hart, Campbell and Co., of Queenstown, Wakatipu; Mr. J. I. Taylor, of Motueka, Nelson and Mr. W. T. L. Locke Travers, also exbibit a splendid collection of photographs of New Zealand scenery, to the merits of which it would take a volume to do justice.

In addition to these the Oamaru Chamber of Commerce, the Wellington City Council, the Corporation of Dunedin, and the Hokitika Committee each exhibit numerous photographs, specially taken under their superintendence, in which the scenic glories and marvels of the wonderful land of the Maori are reproduced with astonishing fidelity to nature."

The Coming Elections.— We observe by advertisement that Mr William Brickell Gibbs announces his intention of seeking the suffrages of the electors in the Motueka-Waimea District.

William B. Gibbs' Creditors.
The first meeting of creditors in the estate of William Brickell Gibbs, insurance agent, was held this morning, the Official Assignee in the chair. The debtor, in his written statement, said that about 18 months ago he was quite free of debt and had about £200 to his credit. At that time he commenced to contest the last general election for Motueka, but abandoned the intention, and contested the seat for Nelson city. He lost the election, the cost being about £300. After the election he paid out every shilling he had, leaving himself without any money at all. He then started to canvass for the Government Insurance Department, but he was not successful in making up the ground he had lost. Some of his creditors bothered the life out of him, and as one of them put the bailiff into his lodgings and took possession of his luggage, he was reluctantly compelled to seek the protection of the Bankruptcy Court. The debtor, examined on oath, deposed that he did not consider it a rash thing to contest the Nelson election, as he received a requisition from a number of citizens to stand. With regard to the Motueka election, he was asked to stand by a number of electors. In order to stand he was obliged to resign his position as canvasser, but he was at liberty to canvass for other offices. He stood in the interests of the Government then in power. He was now travelling for the Australian Mutual Provident Society, but business in the insurance line was very dull. He had a wife and child to support, While he was in the Government Office, he was travelling on commission, and earned about £2 10s per week. He was a photographer by profession, but had given up the business entirely. Three or four years ago he purchased a number of shares in the United Importers' Company. At that time he was in a position to make the investment. The creditors present considered that the debtor's position was due to misfortune and a little mismanagement and on the motion of Mr. C. J. Toxward, seconded by Mr. A. Curtis, it was decided to recommend his discharge.

A lady named Mrs Gibbs died at the residence of Mr T. Bloch, the local photographer, on Friday evening. Deceased come to Colac on a visit for a change of air. About a fortnight ago she became seriously ill with hemorrhage from the stomach, and kept gradually sinking until death supervened. She was a sister to Mr Bloch. Her husband resides in Queensland. Her remains were buried in the local cemetery on Sunday.

We have inspected a very interesting group of photographic portraits of his Honor the Superintendent and the Speaker and Members of the Provincial Council, which have lately been taken at Mr Fletcher's studio in Hardy-street by Mr Bloch.

The portrait of the Superintendent, surmounting a view of the Provincial Buildings, occupies the centre of the group, round which are arranged the different members of the Council, diverging, in the same order in which they are seated during the session, from the Speaker, whose portrait forms the apex of the group. The Clerk and Deputy- Clerk of the Council are also very properly included in this "presentment" of the 'patres conscripti' of the province, and all the portraits, with perhaps only two or three exceptions, are most admirable likenesses. The group forms a very acceptable souvenir of the session of 1867, which, doubtless, many will desire to possess.

Photography, judging from the large number of its professors in this city, must surely be a lucrative, as it is undoubtedly a seductive art. In addition to the two leading photographic establishments, which have achieved quite a colonial reputation for the exquisite specimens of this charming art which they have produced, we have several less pretentious aspirants to popular favor, whose productions testify most satisfactorily to their skill and experience. Among these we may mention Mr Theodore Bloch, who has just returned from Wellington, and opened an establishment in Trafalgar-street, where some beautiful photographs of this city and its environs may be seen, together with others of the scenery on the Manawatu block, of which so much has been heard, and also some interesting portraits of the brave but illfated Major Von Tempsky, and some of the other officers who perished in the sad affair at Te Ruaruru.

In 1872 Theodor Bloch and William Gibbs returned to Europe. They sailed on the "Lincolnshire" which departed Melbourne on 6 July 1872 for London [14]. They both returned to Victoria in 1874 on the "Loch Katrine". This vessel arrived at Hobson Bay on 18 March 1874 having departed London on 22 December 1873 [15]. William Gibbs again returned to Europe in October 1874 on the "Durham" and married Bloch's sister on 2 February 1875 at Vig, Holbaek, Denmark [16].

 In December 1876 at Port Albert in Victoria, Theodor Bloch married Edith Lena Mary Lawson. He probably arrived back in Nelson with his wife on the "Ringarooma". This vessel  arrived on 18 January 1877 from Melbourne. The newspaper [17] passenger list gives their name as "Block", however the Index to Outward Passengers to Interstate, UK, NZ and Foreign Ports 1852-1923 [18] gives their name as "Bloch". This index shows their ages as 39 and 36 years, in January 1877 Theodor Bloch was aged 33 years.

NELSON Works of Art.— We have seen in the descriptions of the Sydney Exhibition from the pens of the special correspondents of the principal newspapers of this and the sister Colonies, special reference made to the photographs and paintings of New Zealand scenery. One correspondent writes :—The walls of the New Zealand Court are everywhere decorated with photographs and paintings, most of which represent views of the beautiful mountain scenery for which New Zealand is as famed as Switzerland.

Amongst the most successful exhibitors of photographs are Messrs. Bartlett, of Auckland Wrigglesworth and Binns, of Wellington; Theodor Bloch, of Nelson and W. H. Perkins, of Greymouth.

Mr John Gully's water color drawings on admirable specimen's of his art, and are greatly admired by all who visit the Court.— It is not only gratifying to find our local artists' talents recognised but it is satisfactory to have the scenery in our district brought prominently before the "gaze of the world."

In June 1880 Bloch's photographs along with other works of art intended for the Melbourne Exhibition were shown at an exhibition at the Masonic Hall to aid the Congregational Church Building Fund:

we may mention a number of very excellent photographs by Mr Bloch; one of these,a panorama of Nelson in four sections, for clearness of detail and general excellence deserves special mention, whilst in some exceedingly pretty scenes on the Maitai the effect was enhanced by the capital effect which the well defined clouds gave the pictures, and altogether we shall be disappointed if Mr Bloch's pictures do not attract considerable notice.

The picture of the new railway bridge at Terang is exceptionally fine, almost every spar in it being distinctly shown. Mr. Bloch has also taken some excellent views of the township from different points, the true artist being apparent in the situations that have been chosen.

A lady named Mrs Gibbs died at the residence of Mr T. Bloch, the local photographer, on Friday evening. Deceased come to Colac on a visit for a change of air. About a fortnight ago she became seriously ill with hemorrhage from the stomach, and kept gradually sinking until death supervened. She was a sister to Mr Bloch. Her husband resides in Queensland. Her remains were buried in the local cemetery on Sunday.

 Mr T. Bloch who was a photographer at Sale in the seventies is on a visit to his son, Mr O. Block, of the telephone department at Sale. Mr Bloch was married in 1876 to Miss Lawson, daughter of Mr C. R. Lawson, head teacher of Stratford State school, and he has a vivid recollection of his honeymoon trip in the old coaching days. It was Mr Bloch's custom to travel round Port Albert, Dargo, Stratford, Sale and Maffra, taking view, and selling them in the various towns. Although Mr Bloch is is advanced in years he is still hale and hearty.

6. Charles Hugh Bloch, born 10 December 1888 in Colac, Victoria, Australia [21], married Elise Oline Coombs [21].

7. Olga Marie Bloch, born 8 January 1892 in Colac, Victoria, Australia married Harold Guerne [21].

8. Olaf Lawson Bloch, born 25 September 1893 in Colac, Victoria, Australia [22], died 2 June, 1937, at Yarram, Victoria aged 43 years, married Jean Crockett Brown and father of Robert Bloch. [22]
